Cobalt

METAL COBALT

Cobalt is a white-silver coloured metal.

In addition to its magnetic properties, it's little ductile and resistant at room temperature.
It fuses at 1495°C.
Cobalt is used in the production of "superalloys", which are alloys for elevated temperature service.

The three main world production places are in Canada and in two states of central Africa.

OXIDE COBALT

Oxide cobalt comes generally in the form of dust and it's used in glass, ceramic, enamel, batteries, optic. Normally is grey-black coloured. There are several types of oxide cobalt for different industries.
Its main characteristics are a high insolubility in water and solubility in acids.

CARBONATE COBALT

Carbonate cobalt is strong red coloured and comes in the form of crystals. Also this type is insoluble in water and soluble in acids. It's used for other cobalt salt production and in  zootechnics as supplement and in ceramic industry.

CHLORIDE COBALT

At room temperature it is a light blue odourless solid. At air or damp exposure it becomes violet.
Chloride cobalt is used as pigment and as damp indicator.

Chloride cobalt is harmful, carcinogenic, allergenic and dangerous for the environment, so it must be used very carefully.

ACETATE COBALT

Acetate cobalt is one of the cobalt salts, precisely the cobalt salt of the acetic acid. Unlike other cobalt salts it is red/violet coloured and cristal shaped. Cobalt acetate is a harmful and allergenic compound. It is used in paint industry and it is soluble in water.
